How to Pass the California Notary Exam on Your First Try

The California Notary Public Examination is a 45-question written test administered by CPS HR Consulting. You need to answer at least 32 questions correctly — a 70% passing score — to move forward with your commission. The good news is that with the right preparation, most people pass on their first attempt. Here is exactly how to study.

Know Where the Questions Come From

Every single question on the exam comes from the California Notary Public Handbook, which is published by the Secretary of State. If you read and understand that handbook, you will be prepared. Your state-approved education course will walk you through all of it.

Focus on These High-Priority Topics

These topics appear most frequently on the California notary exam:

  • The difference between an acknowledgment and a jurat — know these cold
  • Acceptable forms of identification a notary may use to verify a signer
  • Journal requirements — what must be recorded and when
  • Fees a notary is allowed to charge under California law
  • Prohibited acts and the penalties for each
  • The steps of the commissioning process in order

Take Practice Exams

Reading the material is not enough. Taking timed practice tests trains your brain to find the right answer quickly under pressure. Look for practice exams that mirror the format of the actual state test.

Do Not Wait to Schedule Your Exam

Your Proof of Completion certificate from your education course is only valid for 24 months. Schedule your exam soon after finishing your course while the material is still fresh.

What to Bring on Exam Day

  • Your Proof of Completion certificate from your education course
  • Completed California Notary Public Application form
  • A 2x2 color passport photo stapled to your application
  • Valid photo ID
  • Payment for the $40 exam fee

Results and Next Steps

Exam results are typically available within 15 business days. Once you pass, the Secretary of State will mail fingerprinting instructions. From there you are on your way to receiving your commission.
